# Youyin

> Youyin is a free, open, privacy-friendly web app that teaches you to *handwrite* characters from many writing systems — Chinese (Hanzi), Japanese (Kana & Kanji), Korean (Hangul), Greek, Cyrillic, and more. You trace characters with correct stroke order, the app grades your strokes in real time, and a spaced-revision system schedules what to practice next.

Youyin is a static, installable Progressive Web App. It works offline, stores all of your learning data locally on your device (in the browser, via IndexedDB), and requires no account or sign-up. It is built and maintained by MadLad Squad.

## What makes Youyin different

- **Handwriting first.** Unlike flashcard apps that only test recognition, it teaches *production* — drawing each character with the correct stroke order and direction, graded stroke by stroke (powered by HanziWriter).
- **Many scripts in one place.** Chinese Hanzi (Mandarin, Cantonese and more), Japanese Hiragana/Katakana/Kanji, Korean Hangul/Hanja, Greek, Cyrillic, and other alphabets and syllabaries.
- **Cards and phrases.** Practice single characters ("cards") or multi-character sequences ("phrases").
- **Spaced revision.** A knowledge-level system surfaces the characters you most need to review.
- **Private and offline.** All progress lives on your device; the PWA caches assets so it keeps working without a connection.
- **Free and multilingual.** No paywall. The interface is available in English and Bulgarian.
